Glorious Birthday

I know I promised to mix up my green and blue color challenge cards but as it turns out I will be leaving on vacation tomorrow.  I will be taking a short blogging break as well...perhaps as long as two weeks(?)but hopefully less.  This card used a beautiful digital image that I purchased from Fairy Tangle Art on Etsy. These images are very easy to color as I like the shading on the faces while the other shapes are nice and open.

I wanted to mention that I used Sandy Allnock's new Hex Chart to help me select some of the colors that I chose on this image.  Using the chart really helped me especially with my greens.  I really didn't need to blend and blend because the colors were so compatible.

Fishy Wishes

My last card blogged and this one are both my final cards as Splitcoast Color Challenge guest DT for the month of May.  I liked this color combination so much that I actually made 4 cards.  I'll fit the others in between other blogging so as not to be boring with the same color scheme.

I tried to create an "under the lake" effect with my water color. I used a wide flat brush dipped directly into Distress reinker on a palette to make the underwater grasses.  Then I washed plain water over to make the sandy looking bottom.  I love how Distress Inks break down into more than one color...very cool.  My fishy embellishment is from Paper Whimsy Sheet #116.  I added some Wink of Stella to give a little sparkle.  I also used a large embossing tool and a foam mat to give the fish a curve which looked more realistic when I used foam tape to pop it up.

I tried my hand at no-line watercolor and almost completely lost these flowers.  You know when you do that one more thing to your card...and that "thing" darn near does your card in?  We've all been there...me lots of times.  For some reason I thought that a light mist of water would soften the flowers edges up a bit.  The problem is that I got a new water sprayer and misjudged the amount of water that would come out. Spooosh!  I left it be and when I came back to check the "damage" it wasn't so horrible as some parts did survive ok.  I think not moving it saved it as I'm sure the watercolor paper absorbed the water and color.

I made this card for the Saturday Inspiration Challenge at Splitcoast Stampers.  The challenge involved selecting a color combo from a Pinterest board and making a card to coordinate.  I also was in the mood to make an inspirational type card in general.  The only purpose of this card is to give a positive message.  Maybe it would work as a graduation card(?)  Sometimes when I'm feeling low in spirit I make cards to cheer myself up if that makes any sense.  I have spent the past week talking to my Jack Russel Chai, my poor old cat Sly... and thankfully my daughter who visited me a few times...but my husband finally returns home from his adventures tomorrow and that is a good thing as they say ;)

Wings of Courage

This is one of my cards for the Color Challenge at Splitcoast Stampers this week.  I like the look of these colors together.  I don't know if I would have picked these on my own.  I think it's good to try new combinations because sometimes you just get into a rut with color...at least I know I do sometimes. That's why color challenges are good for you ;)

This is a rather large stamp so I had to cut off lots of parts to fit the image to an A7 card.  I think this stamp would be fun to do on a canvas.  It would be fun to try and color with acrylics.  I had a heck of a time with her nose though...watercolor on...daub off...paint...remove...ugh!  I was surprised that all of my reworks didn't ruin the water color paper. That nose is what it is...no apologies :) I'll just keep practicing faces.

Thank You Kindly

I needed to make a clean & simple card with Thank You as the theme.  I stamped the amonite with Versamark and embossed with white embossing powder.  Instead of hand water coloring the image I tried Bister crystals instead.  I sprayed the image with water.  Using a dry paint brush I dropped little specks of Bister water color crystals mostly inside the embossed image and left to air dry overnight. I'm always amazed at the magic that happens with Bister while you're not watching.  What I like about Bister is that it always has some brown in it plus some unexpected colors in addition to the main color on the jar.  For the Thank You die I cut it out 3 times and glued the pieces together for more thickness.

Well Hello There

Another crazy busy day today but I did finish a card this morning.  Now to be honest I had an ulterior motive with this image.  Maybe I will still do it sometime...use the "pull my finger" stamp from Stampotique.  I did behave though as the more I added on the card I could see it was not going to work out that way.  I worked on flicking Copics to create a blend of two totally different colors.  I actually cut this out myself although as you can see it's not really too hard.  It still took me way too long- as my forehead beaded up with sweat...wondering if some important thing would be lopped off accidentally...including my own fingertips.  All is good when there are butterflies and bling right?  ;)

Flying By

I literally feel like I'm "flying by" today as I have been so busy this week.  My husband is getting ready to leave for a whitewater trip out in Utah.  It seems like Murphy's Law is in play as last minute things keep cropping up. This card was a nice break from all that.

I white embossed the Penny Black floral and the My Favorite Things butterfly separately onto water color paper.  I water colored with Distress inks.  I only used 3 colors for the whole card so it has a "matchy" feel to it...kind of serene. Because of that though I needed to do something to pop the butterfly from the background.  I used a Papertrey Ink die that looks like "messy string" which seemed too flat.  I added some pretty iridescent real string for more interest on top of that.  Then I popped up the butterfly to get some lift.  I finished it off with some sequins glued with Matte Medium and some matching flags.  I accidentally creased one of the three butterflies I colored when die cutting the one I was going to use.  I stamped them too close to each other.  I was able to use the boo-boo butterfly by cutting off the bad part and putting it inside the card for interest.

Polly's Dreams

I made this card for Polly who is the Featured Stamper this week at Splitcoast Stampers.  She is a fellow Minnesotan.  We both enjoy vintage images, birds and faeries.  Her wonderful gallery is here

Crafty Secrets turned all of their former stamp designs into digital.  So while I have almost their whole catalog in stamp form I have been buying some of the sets in digital form as well.  This allows me to enlarge designs...giving me way more options...and way more fun coloring too!

Sea You!

When I got the colors this week for the Splitcoast Color Challenge I immediately thought "beachy".  The colors are Baked Brown Sugar, Coastal Cabana, Crisp Cantaloupe, Pistachio Pudding and Strawberry Slush.  For this card there is a bit of all of them. I used Distress Inks to create my colors as I don't have SU inks.

I made my own background on a 4 x 4" Art Square. First I used paint to stencil nautilus shells on the white background. After they were dry I smooshed some Distress Inks on my mat and spritzed with water. I then waited for that to dry and stamped a word stamp randomly onto the background. Finally I sprayed Shimmer Spritz Sparkle over the whole thing.

The seashells are made from glossy card stock. I used various Adirondack Alcohol Inks Lights to color the glossy card stock.  Before attaching the shells to my finished piece I used a foam pad and big ball stylus to curve the pieces so they would have dimension.

It Will Be Okay

This is the second card I made for the Splitcoast Color Challenge this week.  I water colored it using the Peerless watercolors which are really vibrant.  I die cut the border on the side from the same paper I used to make the card so that I would have a perfect match.  Again I used the Stick It adhesive paper with the die cut for "no worries" adhesion.
