Too Much Happy

I am very happy to have used another background piece from my stash.  This one was a little "scary" for color.  Just for fun I stamped this Tim Holtz image onto the background just to see what it would look like because I didn't really didn't think it would work out.  Well- I kinda liked it but it needed some toning down...a lot of toning down.  I used Distress Ink first in Tea Dye and then moved on to Pumice Stone which was the perfect color. I originally used Distress Paint, water and an embossing folder to create the diamond pattern. When I went over the paint with Distress Ink it created some interesting color combinations as the colored paint acted as a resist in spots. I made lots of spatters with white and vintage gold acrylic paint because nothing says happy... like clouds of spatter...right?

Purple Wishes

Sometimes I get a huge craving for purple...yes the color purple.  Purple can be "royal" ...wild and poppin' or very softly elegant like these blossoms.  These beautiful gladiolas got drenched in purple shades.  I used my hand colored Sandy Allnock Hex Chart for Copic Markers to find purples that I never thought of as purple before.  I tell you this chart is a wonder.  I am now putting more unused Copic markers to good use.  I think I am doing better with my shading using the Hex Chart too.  In my opinion this chart is well worth it.

Bloomin' Happy Birthday

This card was quite a "build" for me.  I normally don't work so hard on card design but this sketch challenge was just the right thing to keep my mind busy today.  My husband was roped into this endeavor by fussy cutting my "fresh picked" birthday girl for me.  I chose to use bright colors which caused me troubles when I needed to match up card stock.  The dotty black background paper gave the colors some pop and also gave some space for the eyes to rest.  In my world tiny polka dots are a "neutral". ;)

Wish Big

This week the featured stamper at Splitcoast Stampers is Lisa Kubica.  Her gallery is really great.  The card that I chose from her gallery to use for inspiration had one of the Tim Holtz "crazy birds" on it.  First I made the mistake of buying only one of the Bird Crazy stamps...and then I ordered the whole gang.  I just couldn't see what others saw right away but now I understand how addicting these little characters are.  They are each just filled with personality.  I added a vintage style birthday hat to this sweet goofball...and popped him up...too much fun :)

Green Tree

Still plugging away at using my stash of backgrounds.  This one was a pretty pool of watercolor just needing some sort of focal image.  I found this beautiful tree in my Character Construction collection.  I used the Misti to get good stamped detail on the rough watercolor paper.

The Bright Side

I like making collage style cards.  I never quite know where they will go when I start them.  This time I had a challenge to help me focus.  The challenge was to create a card using an umbrella and/or rain.  Personally I love the rain but generally "rain" can be used as a description of "troubles".  "When it rains it pours"... which sort of mirrors my own life at the moment.  So of course I have another really good excuse to make a card to cheer someone up and myself as well.  I have so many bits & pieces to dig through when I'm on the hunt for the perfect thing for my mini collage.  I have a little drawer of fairies that my husband was very nice to fussy cut for me.  I picked this fairy because she looked good against the splotchy smooshy background I picked as a base.  Luckily I found a paper pack with a rainy theme and which also matched the colors I had going on.  After that everything sort of came together pretty easily.

Brave Wings

I used another background piece chosen from my stash to create a card for the weekly Color Challenge at Splitcoast Stampers.  I used a smooshing/stencil stamping technique with Distress Inks and  a mesh type patterned stencil...covered with a large acrylic block...and left to air dry.  This is actually 110# Solar White card stock. The finish is smooth so it picked up the fine details of the stamp well.  I used my trusty Misti to stamp twice and get even better ink coverage.

Dream In Color

This is another card featuring positive and negative stencils.  The background was created using Distress Inks and the "smooshing" technique on watercolor paper.  I then placed the positive feminine shaped stencil over the background and sponged over most of the background with opaque black acrylic paint.  After air drying this layer I used the negative stencil of a word background with sponged white paint to make a background.  I spattered some gold acrylic paint and sprayed with Sheer Shimmer Spritz before removing the positive stencil shape to reveal the original color underneath. I added some more gold to the dress using a gel pen.  I created a very plain inside as I may need this space for writing an uplifting note.

Love Yourself

Every once in awhile I get the urge to make backgrounds or experiment with water color techniques.  I accumulate these pieces in a box until I can figure out ways to use them.  The card I made today is using a piece of water color card stock that I created a quick Brusho background on.  I used a Crafter's Workshop stencil of a woman which had both the positive and negative piece.  I took the positive piece and laid it over my background and sponged around the shape with black matte opaque acrylic paint. Once that was dry I traced the shape with a white gel pen.  I replaced the positive piece and sponged through another stencil using white acrylic paint to create interest and depth in the background. This is a very easy technique and can be used with any coordinating color opaque acrylic paint and shape of choice.  If your stencil doesn't have coordinating positive pieces you can create your own by tracing a simple stencil shape onto window plastic or masking sheets. I got the idea to do this technique from Dina Kowal who hosted the mixed media challenge at Splitcoast Stampers this week.
